Upwork charges a flat withdrawal fee per transfer: $0.99 to a local bank outside the US, $50 for a US dollar wire, and, since September 1, 2026, $2.99 for each Direct to U.S. Bank withdrawal if your tax address is outside the United States. Fiverr’s withdrawal fees work differently: $0 to PayPal and $3 for a local-currency bank transfer through Payoneer. The larger cost is usually currency conversion, charged by the payment provider rather than the platform.

Service fee and withdrawal fee on Upwork

Upwork takes its cut long before the withdrawal screen. The Freelancer Service Fee comes off your earnings and, in Upwork’s words, “ranges from 0% to 15% per contract”; you see the percentage when a client sends an offer, and it is fixed once the contract begins (Upwork Help Center). The variable range replaced the old flat 10% for new contracts on May 1, 2025, and existing contracts kept their rate. If a client is refunded, Upwork returns the service fee paid on that amount (Upwork).

A few arrangements sit outside the standard range. Freelancers paid through Upwork Payroll and freelancers on Any Hire contracts pay no Freelancer Service Fee, Direct Contracts pay a reduced fee, and freelancers working with Enterprise clients “typically” pay 10% (Upwork). Upwork’s Fee and ACH Authorization Agreement sets Freelancer Initiated Direct Contracts at “a flat 5% of the total Freelancer Fees you have invoiced”, and records that freelancers resident outside the United States contract with Elance Ltd. rather than Upwork Global (agreement PDF).

Withdrawal fees are a second, separate charge, and they are flat per transfer rather than a percentage. Money also has to clear first: hours on hourly contracts bill weekly and the earnings are “available ten days later (the following Wednesday)”, while fixed-price milestones, Project Catalog orders and bonuses release five days after client approval or payment (Upwork). Tax information and a withdrawal method both have to be on file before anything moves.

Upwork withdrawal methods, fees, minimums and timing

Method Upwork fee per transfer Minimum or limit Arrival
Direct to Local Bank (outside the US) $0.99 minimum $5 USD or higher, by country, with country caps within four business days
Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH) free with a US tax address, $2.99 with an international tax address from September 1, 2026 a US checking or savings account that accepts ACH two to five business days
U.S. Dollar Wire Transfer $50.00 an account at a non-US bank on SWIFT processed in one business day, up to seven business days to arrive
PayPal Upwork “charges a small fee per transfer”, shown under Settings > Withdrawals > Add a method (Upwork) your PayPal name must match your verified Upwork name (Upwork) mostly immediate, up to 24 hours
Payoneer (outside the US) “a small per-transfer fee” (Upwork) Payoneer may set its own minimums and maximums by location or card type (Upwork) typically within 24 hours
Instant Pay (US freelancers only) $2.00 maximum $2,999 per transfer typically within minutes
M-Pesa (Kenya only) shown in Settings > Withdrawals > Add a method (Upwork) per Upwork’s country limits for Kenya usually immediate, occasionally up to five business days

Three mechanics apply whichever row you pick. A newly added method becomes active only after three calendar days, the beneficiary name has to match your verified Upwork name including middle and additional family names, and a started withdrawal “can’t be canceled or reversed”; money sent to a closed or invalid account usually bounces back within four to eight business days (Upwork). Direct to Local Bank also has a 12:00 pm UTC cutoff for same-day processing, and Upwork notes that company bank accounts cannot be registered for TRY and PKR.

The $2.99 Direct to U.S. Bank fee from September 1, 2026

Direct to U.S. Bank used to be the free route for freelancers who held US account details through a digital bank. It stays free for freelancers with a United States tax address, and from September 1, 2026 a $2.99 fee applies to each withdrawal when the tax address is outside the United States. Upwork says the charge “helps cover the cost for maintaining Direct to U.S. bank as a payout option”. Withdrawals scheduled before that date were processed free of charge, but the fee applies to any new withdrawal and to any previously scheduled withdrawal executing on or after September 1 (Upwork).

Upwork accepts digital banks for this method, including ACH: “we accept digital bank accounts like Facebank, Wise”, depending on your location, and the practical test is to enter the details as a withdrawal method. The caveat is support: digital banks “rely on a partner (or intermediary) bank to process transactions with Upwork”, which makes tracing a lost payment difficult or impossible, and Upwork warns it may not be able to help (Upwork).

Currency conversion on Upwork withdrawals

Your Upwork balance is in US dollars. Withdraw in anything else and the payment goes through a conversion that Upwork does not perform itself: “This is handled by our payment partners, and they set the actual exchange rate used.” Those partners “may include a markup on the rate to cover their own costs”, which is why the rate you receive can sit below the mid-market rate you find by searching “USD to EUR” (Upwork). The markup lives inside the rate rather than on your fee line, so it never appears next to the $0.99 or $2.99.

The same logic runs the other way on wires. Upwork states that transfers to non-US dollar accounts are subject to market rates and that “Your bank will determine the exchange rate you will receive”; your bank may charge “an exchange fee or currency spread” instead of or on top of the incoming international wire fee, and an intermediary or correspondent bank may add its own (Upwork). For local-currency transfers, Upwork notes that “Sending funds in your local currency may reduce or eliminate incoming bank fees” (Upwork).

Fiverr’s service fee, clearance period and withdrawal fees

Fiverr’s seller economics are simpler and stricter. “For every order you complete, you earn 80% of the purchase amount, including Gig Extras and tips” (Fiverr), a share repeated in the Payment Terms (Spanish edition, last updated November 2025). Revenue then waits: it “becomes available 14 days after the order is completed”, or 7 days for Seller Plus, Top Rated and Pro Talent freelancers, and 7 days after a completed weekly report on hourly contracts (Fiverr). Early Payout shortens that wait for Top Rated freelancers and Seller Plus Premium members at a fee of 1% of the total clearing amount, calculated on earned revenue and not available on hourly orders.

Payout method Withdrawal fee Minimum withdrawal Transfer time
PayPal $0 $1 usually immediate, up to 24 hours
Bank Transfer via Payoneer, local currency $3 $20 one to three business days
Bank Transfer via Payoneer, USD wire $1 $20 five to seven business days
Payoneer Account balance $3 $10 up to two business days

One figure is worth attributing carefully, because Fiverr’s own pages differ. The overview table on “Withdrawing your earnings” lists Bank Transfer (via Payoneer) at $1, while the dedicated Payoneer setup article splits it into $3 for a local-currency transfer and $1 for a USD wire, and the Payment Terms list Local Bank Transfer at $3 per transfer with the $1 Direct Deposit (ACH) route marked US only. For a freelancer outside the US taking local currency, $3 is the figure two of the three pages support.

Fiverr adds its own gates. Withdrawals are capped at $5,000 per transaction, a second withdrawal needs a 24-hour wait after the first, adding or changing a payout method needs 24 hours, and updating a verified phone number needs 48. The Fiverr Revenue Card still works for existing holders at $1 to $3 depending on speed, but Fiverr discontinued it for new users in December 2022. On conversion, Fiverr is explicit that “All currency exchange services related to such withdrawals are provided by Fiverr’s Payment Service Providers”, and that sellers can always take US dollars instead (Payment Terms).

The receiving side: PayPal, Payoneer and Wise fees

The platform fee is the small half of the bill. Whichever provider sits between the platform and your bank account charges its own conversion and withdrawal fees, which is where the difference between Wise and Payoneer usually shows up.

PayPal. Its multi-market consumer fee page (last updated September 28, 2026) states that “The transaction exchange rate used for your currency conversion includes a fee which we charge above the base exchange rate”, and sets that fee for payments received, including PayPal Payouts, at 3.5% for its Americas group (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay and others), 3.0% for Asia Pacific, for the Middle East and Africa group and for South East Europe, 2.5% for Malaysia, and 3.00% in all other cases (PayPal). Withdrawal to a bank is priced per market on the same page: no fee in the Philippines above 7,000 PHP and 50.00 PHP below it, 3,500.00 COP per Colombian peso withdrawal, 75.00 ARS in Argentina, 550.00 RSD in Serbia, and 4.00 PEN in Peru or 1.00% with a 10.00 USD minimum for a USD withdrawal. The US consumer page sets standard bank withdrawals at no fee when no conversion is involved and instant transfers at 1.75%, with a 0.25 USD minimum and a 25.00 USD maximum; the UK page charges 3% above the base exchange rate for business-account conversions. The arithmetic behind those spreads is covered in our guide to PayPal currency conversion fees.

Payoneer. Its pricing page (last updated January 1, 2026) prices receiving from “marketplaces and integrated platforms” as “Varies by marketplace”, receiving via a local-currency receiving account as free, and receiving in a non-local currency at 1% with a 1.00 USD minimum. Paying out to a bank account in your own country in local currency costs 1.50 USD in the listed countries; other corridors, with or without conversion, cost 1.2% to 4%, and “In some countries, a minimum fee of up to 20.00 USD or equivalent may apply.” Moving funds between your own Payoneer balances costs 0.50%, the annual card fee is 29.95 USD, card transactions with conversion run up to 3.5%, and an annual account fee of 29.95 USD applies if the account receives less than 6,000.00 USD in any 12 consecutive months (Payoneer).

Wise. Receiving is free for domestic, non-wire payments in the nine currencies Wise lists, and account details for 22 currencies cost nothing; a USD wire or SWIFT payment into the account costs a fixed 6.11 USD, a GBP SWIFT payment 2.16 GBP and a EUR SWIFT payment 2.39 EUR (Wise). Conversion is charged openly: Wise says it uses only the mid-market rate, with a conversion fee that varies by currency and starts “From 0.24%” (Wise).

A $1,000 Upwork balance by route

This compares flat fees only, with conversion shown as the provider’s own stated percentage applied to $1,000. The $1,000 is already net of the Freelancer Service Fee, and the tax address is outside the US.

Route Flat fees Dollars leaving Upwork Conversion at the provider’s stated rate
Direct to Local Bank, local currency $0.99 $999.01 before conversion set by Upwork’s payment partners, who “may include a markup”, plus incoming fees at some banks (Upwork)
Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH) into a USD account $2.99 $997.01 free to receive a domestic USD payment at Wise; converting later costs about $2.40 per $1,000 at Wise’s stated starting rate of 0.24%, which varies by currency
U.S. Dollar Wire Transfer $50.00, plus 6.11 USD if the wire lands in a Wise USD account $950.00 your receiving bank sets the rate and may add a spread, incoming wire fee or intermediary fee (Upwork)
PayPal Upwork’s “small fee per transfer”, shown under Settings > Withdrawals > Add a method (Upwork) depends on that fee PayPal’s stated conversion fee on a received payout is $30 per $1,000 at 3.0%, or $35 at the 3.5% Americas rate, plus its market withdrawal fee (PayPal)
Payoneer Upwork’s “small per-transfer fee” (Upwork) depends on that fee $1.50 to a same-country local-currency bank in the listed countries, or $12 to $40 per $1,000 on corridors priced at 1.2% to 4%

On Fiverr the same $1,000 order credits $800, since the freelancer earns 80%, and that clears in 14 days or 7 for Top Rated, Seller Plus and Pro. Withdrawing the $800 to PayPal costs nothing on Fiverr’s side and then meets PayPal’s conversion rate above; a local-currency bank transfer through Payoneer costs $3 and then Payoneer’s conversion. Taking it early through Early Payout costs 1% of the clearing amount, roughly $8 on $800.

Lowering withdrawal costs on Upwork and Fiverr

  1. Withdraw less often. Upwork’s bank fees are flat, so four monthly Direct to Local Bank transfers cost $3.96 where one costs $0.99. Automatic withdrawals let you pick weekly, twice per month, monthly or quarterly, set a minimum amount so funds stay put until the balance reaches it, and keep a reserve balance of up to $250 for Connects and membership; the automatic threshold sits between $100 and $1,000, the Withdraw now button still works at any time, and funds that have sat for 180 days are withdrawn regardless of your settings.
  2. Take local currency when the receiving bank is the problem. Upwork’s guidance is direct: “Sending funds in your local currency may reduce or eliminate incoming bank fees” (Upwork).
  3. Hold dollars where the conversion rate is published. If you keep USD account details, the conversion happens at the receiving provider instead, at a rate you can read in advance, such as Wise’s mid-market rate with a fee from 0.24%. Our multi-currency account explainer covers how those account details work.
  4. Keep wires for large sums. At $50 per transfer plus whatever your bank and any intermediary charge, a wire costs more than 50 times the Direct to Local Bank fee (Upwork).
  5. Watch Payoneer’s standing charges if your volume is low. The 29.95 USD annual account fee applies when the account receives under 6,000.00 USD in 12 consecutive months, and moving money between your own balances costs 0.50% (Payoneer).
  6. Check your country’s minimum and cap before you set a schedule. Upwork lists a $101 minimum for Barbados and a $3,000 limit for Brazil, among others (Upwork).
  7. Add methods before payday. Upwork activates a new withdrawal method after three calendar days (Upwork); Fiverr requires 24 hours after adding or changing a method and 48 hours after a phone number change (Fiverr).

Country availability and limits

None of these fees matter until the method exists where you live. Upwork states plainly that “Available options may vary and change over time” and that you see your choices only when you add a method (Upwork). Direct to Local Bank works only for the countries and currencies Upwork lists, with per-country figures such as a $5 minimum and $10,000 limit for Bangladesh, Colombia, Costa Rica, Indonesia and Uruguay, a $99,999 limit for Kenya, Montenegro and Morocco, a $12 minimum for Brazil and a $1,000,000 limit for Bulgaria (Upwork). The same page notes that Argentinian authorities may apply income tax retention to incoming remittances, with ARBA withholding rates that “vary between 0.20% and 3.5%”, and that freelancers in Jamaica may need a deposit authorization form.

Payoneer as an Upwork method requires that you “Live outside the U.S. or India”, and Mali-XOF is not an accepted currency (Upwork). Instant Pay is for US freelancers and M-Pesa for Kenya (Upwork). On the Fiverr side, PayPal payouts work “only in countries where PayPal supports receiving payments”, with a business account sometimes available where personal accounts cannot receive (Fiverr); the Payoneer Account option “isn’t available in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Sudan, or Syria”, and “Users in Malaysia cannot withdraw in their local currency due to local regulations” (Fiverr).

How we checked this

Facts checked on October 11, 2026 against primary pages only: the Upwork and Fiverr help centers and Upwork’s Fee and ACH Authorization Agreement, plus the published pricing pages of PayPal, Payoneer and Wise. Every fee, minimum and timing figure above links to the page that states it. Fiverr’s Payoneer figures come from its Payoneer setup article and its Payment Terms in the Spanish edition, last updated November 2025, which agree on $3 for a local-currency bank transfer.
