PayPal in ChatGPT is not a simple “connect your PayPal wallet” button. PayPal’s current documentation describes an agentic checkout system built around Braintree, OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), and tightly restricted payment tokens. For merchants, that creates a path to sell inside AI assistants. For shoppers, the payment methods shown in PayPal’s ACP guide are cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay; PayPal Wallet and Venmo Wallet are listed as coming soon.

The short answer

A merchant can make a product catalog and checkout flow available to ChatGPT by building an app with OpenAI’s Apps SDK and connecting it to a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. When the shopper reaches payment, the app calls PayPal’s Braintree integration rather than passing raw card details through the conversational interface.

The important distinction is between the merchant’s payment provider and the shopper’s visible payment method. PayPal can power the transaction through Braintree even when the shopper pays by card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. That does not mean every ChatGPT user can select a PayPal Wallet today.

What PayPal Agent Ready does

PayPal calls the broader product Agent Ready. It is intended to help merchants make their stores discoverable and purchasable in AI-assisted shopping journeys.

The integrations vary by assistant. PayPal’s overview says ChatGPT uses OpenAI’s ACP and Braintree delegated payment tokens. Google AI Mode and Gemini use Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), with either Braintree or PayPal Orders v2 depending on the merchant’s setup.

That separation matters when planning an implementation. Agent Ready is not a single universal plug-in. A merchant still needs the catalog, checkout, order, tax, shipping, refund, and customer-service systems behind the assistant-facing experience.

How a ChatGPT checkout works

PayPal’s ACP documentation describes a merchant-built ChatGPT app with three main pieces:

  1. An Apps SDK interface. This is the shopping experience the customer sees inside ChatGPT.
  2. An MCP server. It exposes tools for product discovery, cart handling, checkout creation, payment completion, and order status.
  3. A Braintree payment connection. The checkout uses Braintree as the provider when the app calls OpenAI’s checkout interface.

In PayPal’s example flow, the merchant’s MCP tool returns a checkout session. The app then calls requestCheckout() with Braintree as the provider. When the shopper approves payment, the merchant’s complete_checkout tool receives a delegated payment token and uses it to create the transaction.

If you are comparing the surrounding standards, Radlof’s guide to ACP versus MCP explains why ACP defines the commerce exchange while MCP connects the assistant to merchant tools.

Why delegated payment tokens matter

A delegated payment token is designed for a particular purchase, not as a reusable card number. PayPal says the token is one-time, tied to the merchant, limited by amount, and restricted by time.

Those limits reduce what an intercepted token could be used for. They also keep payment credentials out of the merchant’s conversational layer. The shopper authorizes the payment through the provider-controlled flow, and the merchant receives a constrained token to complete the agreed transaction.

This does not remove ordinary commerce obligations. The merchant still needs accurate totals, clear shipping and tax calculations, usable receipts, fraud controls, and a documented process for cancellations, refunds, and chargebacks. Our agentic checkout disputes guide covers those operational questions.

Which payment methods are available

PayPal’s ACP page currently lists these supported methods:

  • card
  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay

The same page labels PayPal Wallet and Venmo Wallet as coming soon. Merchants should therefore avoid advertising “Pay with PayPal in ChatGPT” as if the PayPal Wallet button were universally live.

Availability can also depend on merchant account configuration, country, device, browser, and the assistant’s own rollout. A production launch should be tested in the actual target market and account, not inferred from a documentation example.

What merchants need before building

Start with the commerce system, not the chat window. You need a reliable product feed, current prices and availability, deterministic order totals, supported shipping options, tax handling, and an order record that can survive a dropped conversational session.

PayPal’s documentation also points merchants to the Braintree control panel and API reporting for AI-initiated transactions. That gives operations teams a way to filter ChatGPT orders and reconcile them with normal payment activity.

A practical implementation checklist:

  • confirm that the Braintree account and payment methods are eligible;
  • map every assistant action to an auditable server-side event;
  • calculate price, tax, shipping, and discounts on the merchant server;
  • make the final total explicit before authorization;
  • treat the delegated token as single-use and short-lived;
  • keep order confirmation and refund paths available outside ChatGPT;
  • test failures such as expired carts, changed inventory, rejected payments, and repeated tool calls.

For a platform-specific example, see WooCommerce agentic checkout. The same control principle applies: the store remains the system of record.

Where the PayPal AI toolkit fits

PayPal also publishes an AI tools toolkit for merchant-side agents. It exposes PayPal capabilities as agent tools so a business can build workflows around orders, payments, invoices, disputes, and related operations.

That toolkit is useful, but it is not the same product as ChatGPT Instant Checkout. The toolkit helps an agent call PayPal APIs. ACP defines the shopper-facing checkout exchange in ChatGPT. A merchant may use both, but they solve different layers of the system.

What shoppers should check

Before approving an AI-assisted purchase, confirm the merchant, items, quantities, delivery address, shipping method, taxes, and final amount. Save the order confirmation and note where returns or disputes are handled.

Treat a request to send cryptocurrency, buy gift cards, or move the conversation to an unrelated payment channel as a warning sign. A legitimate delegated checkout should present a clear merchant and transaction total through the supported payment flow.

The practical takeaway

PayPal’s ChatGPT path is real, but the precise claim is narrower than “PayPal Wallet now works everywhere in ChatGPT.” Today’s documented integration uses Braintree and OpenAI ACP to let eligible merchants complete assistant-initiated purchases with constrained payment tokens. Cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay are the currently listed methods; PayPal Wallet and Venmo Wallet remain marked as coming soon.

For merchants, the hard work is not adding a chat button. It is making inventory, totals, fulfillment, customer support, and payment state dependable enough for an assistant to use. Radlof’s guide to Shopify agentic storefronts shows the same underlying shift from pages alone to machine-readable commerce.
